A Bit About Me

About five years ago, with no more concrete career goals other than "I want to go see how people outside of the Global North (or West World, which ever term you prefer) really lived", I left my PhD in Ancient Near Eastern History studies in search of something more. Now, five years later with a lot of sweat, blood and volunteering, I'm lucky enough to work in International Development.

To get to that place, I've made my way through a number of cities and positions. I worked for two years in face-to-face fundraising on the West Coast of Canada. Those people that stand on street corners and ask you if you have a second for "insert-charity-name-here".... yeah that was me... I've spent almost two years in Southern and East Africa in volunteer and interning with local organisations. I've also had to take the occasional grace period in Toronto, Canada to recover (financially) from my various adventures overseas.

On top of the amazing professional experience I've gained, living and working overseas, it has been an incredible experience in itself. I have been able to travel to some of the poorest regions, meet those living below the poverty line and see how the way the Global North does impact people in other countries.

But coming back from overseas, it's easy to get caught back up in the normal rhythm of everyday life. It happened to me last time I came back from overseas, and I wanted this time to be different. I wanted to see if it was possible to live the lessons I've learned and my values... and on an NGO salary no less.

So here I am, a self-confessed fashion addict, living in London, trying to live ethically and hopefully share a bit of what I've learned about development work with whoever also sees themselves as a long-distance neighbour.
